The year is 2098.
We’ve cured cancer and immortality genes have made some bold strides, but nothing prepared us for what came next.
Astronomers have documented a constant, white searing light that has remained unchanged for several days. Eventually, we would classify it as a high category comet on its course towards Earth.
Collectively, a broadcast was sent out informing the world that a comet would come, and there was no known recourse for humanity.
We were given a deadline – 2 years until impact.
How does a nation or planet prepare for an announcement of impending doom? Our leaders decided to announce it on a global scale. It was simple.
“No words nor wisdom can bring about explanation, solace, or hope as to what will happen from this day forward. It is my position to inform you that we have been given two years until a calamity known as 20xx-C will collide with our atmosphere and within moments – us. Use this time for you and your loved ones. This hour, this minute is definable, is calculable. Measure it with love, with a celebration of life, with urgency, and with respect to what we have experienced together. Hopefully we will see you on another side.”
We were given the warning, and were told to experience life. To love, to learn, and create memories in urgency. While there were some who did, others took to the streets to experience life without the limitations of a society. No one cared because consequences paled in comparison to death.
It was a monumental mistake that the powers that be had made. Now they had to deal with the fallout of a world whose cuffs had been taken off, whose lives had been given no meaning and filled with grief, turmoil, and rage.
When the comet came, it broke apart into meteorites and showered parts of our planet with blazing, colorful starlight. Our predictions indicated that the main impact site would be in the Eastern Hemisphere, but showers would pelt other parts of the planet. We were not faced with extinction, but a fundamental loss that would have us picking up the pieces of our civilization for a time we could not fathom.
Food became a luxury as some farmers kept their harvests to themselves and their families. Famine and disease reared their biblical heads in certain parts of the world. All the while, cries of rapture, apocalypse, and hatred forged deeper and more profound paths of segregation than what existed before.
When the smoke cleared and the embers cooled, we were left with a partially ruined world… one that was fragmented, changed, but determined for a resurgence or restoration.
Years went by, and the nations had been broken up. Some had to look upon stronger individuals for help, which created pocket communities across the more impacted sites, especially Europe.
The Eastern countries were looked towards as safe havens and lands of food – of potential. Then they started to block incoming travelers. The world became more cloistered than it ever had been, and sea-facing communities were at the heart of its hostility. If you couldn’t speak English, you were an enemy – at least this is what the other continents of the world believed. Truth be told, the great US was eating itself from the inside out, and its citizens even practiced hatred on one another as it boiled down to survival.
That was, until the wounds of the world from the impact sites began their own strike, in the form of an alien pathogen which would run the gamut of the surrounding areas of every crater. The left-over pieces of government knew about it from day one, but decided to keep it confidential and closed off, as Earth was adrift in mind, body, and soul.
Survivors began to become quarantined in colonies, but the world soon learned of its spread as it leaked beyond the purview of a broken government.
Our story begins at the height of the leak. You awake in a research facility, strapped to a chair, and discover that there is more to this quarantine than meets the eye… more to everything. Your world will unfold through this research facility as you are a test subject in one of the dozens of quarantined sites. You will learn about what happened, what was brought to earth in the collisions, and about the changes that are being made to humanity itself as the disease rapidly evolves within you. You will undergo changes and be reborn with strange capabilities with a desire to lash out. You are infected, but maybe you’re the next step in humanity’s survival?
Will you march into the madness of the new horizons that give way from this new pathogen, or join the ranks of the new government orders?
