Derrica 12 was once the location of a thriving agricultural colony, New Malta, in the Kaus Borealis system. Twenty-four years ago, all communication from the colony stopped. Several avenues of investigation took place, including the dispatch of several USCMC units, but the official report across all those avenues was non-conclusive. There was no evidence of the colonists, of the livestock they’d raised, of the crops they’d grown. There was also no evidence of any type of combat or resistance – all structures were intact. All land and air vehicles were present and in working condition. Records showed the last communications in and out of the colony contained nothing unusual.
Derrica 12 was a vast garden world. The establishment and subsequent success of New Malta had proven that the planet was a perfect candidate for another colonization effort. This never happened. Despite the inconclusive nature of the investigations, Derrica 12 was labeled a hazardous planet for all spacefaring humans. It fell under the jurisdiction of the USCMC to observe, and it was their efforts that kept various civilian vessels from landing with the intention of looting or investigating the mystery of New Malta.
Everything about this was unusual and it attracted attention. Queries were brushed aside or dismissed entirely and over time and the hype surrounding the fate of the colonists of New Malta faded, but was never entirely forgotten. Four years after the incident, the USCMC designated Derrica 12 the location for their annual orbital military exercises. On paper it made total sense: the area was low traffic due to the travel ban, devoid of civilian spaceports or outposts, and the system itself held nothing else of interest.
For twenty years the orbital war games have taken place above Derrica 12. The games take place over a period of thirty days and include various human military factions, though they are organized and hosted by the USCMC. The upcoming twenty-first year holds a change – in addition to the orbital exercises, there will also be exercises taking place planetside. There is a considerable amount of public interest in this year’s war games, most notably from well known names such as the Yutani Corporation and Borgia Industries.
The time has come. The skies above Derrica 12 are already filled with cruisers, corvettes and frigates as well as the very few civilian vessels permitted for the purposes of observation. The first half of the exercises will take place in orbit with the second half taking place planetside. Eager anticipation has flooded through the ranks of those participating, leading to general impetuousness and flaring tempers. Tactics, strategy and the effectiveness of chain of command will be tried and evaluated. The bulk of humanity’s strongest and smartest are all gathered here in orbit, ready and eager for the activities to start.
But this time, they’re not alone.
