It’s the year 2281 and nobody really cares. Life proceeds as it always has and probably always will, but as the population has continued to increase, cities have become so large that they have begun to merge with each other, and to keep things organized, the world is being divided into different zones. Each zone is a large section of commercial, industrial, residential or who-knows-what controlled by its own miniature government, like a state compacted into a tenth of its usual size.
Zones tend to get a little crazy. Politics are accelerating so far that machines need to do a large portion of the work. And when machines are doing a large portion of the work, people want control of those machines. And when people are constantly tweaking machines to make them function to the way that THEY want, zones go hostile. And when zones go hostile, all the droids and drones and automatic cars and weapons and basically everything ever goes insane and starts blowing the whole zone into shrapnel, before moving out to invade every neighboring zone. So, life is basically hell.
