For years, faster-than-light travel foundered as engineered technologic systems failed to navigate the chaotic currents of hyperspace. Ships often emerged at their destination irreparably damaged, when they arrived at all. The solution, proven in limited animal studies, was the propriosensory systems of living brains. The same neurobiological system that allowed living creatures to navigate through a chaotic world would, when allied to starship technology and proto-intelligent computer systems, allow a ship to navigate through hyperspace.
Now the Dauntless, a ship with a living human mind at its core, orbits in spacedock, awaiting its human crew. The ship is intelligent and self-aware, but no one knows what to expect from a vat-grown brain subjected to accelerated development. Is the ship human? Is it sane? Can it be trusted? Does it have the mind of a child, a machine, or a god? Will it view the crew as parents, companions, pets, or parasites? The crew and command of the Dauntless are tasked with “bringing up” this new life form, whose body is a ship and whose natural environment is space.
