The invention of the EmP Drive changed things pretty quickly. Getting to Venus in a few days, Mars in a few weeks, to the edge of the Solar System, less than a year. Everything changed.
Except for people. They’re still the same. Bastards, all of ‘em.
Sure, some physically changed. The winged Titians of Jupiter, the long headed Martians, and thick skinned Venusians, are now all a thing. Each group adapted to their environments with extreme genetic engineer during the First Wave. They still consider themselves human, although not every one agrees with that assessment, and hell, even some of them do not agree with that, either.
But, for the most part, people are still obsessed with the same stuff: power, money, status, and often, all of that, in no particular order. The Great Earth Powers may no longer be warring with one another, but they are more than willing to take their conflicts out among the void of space. And now, during this Second Wave, they are all muscling for their piece of whatever they can get their hands on, usually at the expense of whomever was there before them. Every settlement and hab is filled with their spies and operatives, and constant skirmishes are fought between their proxies and privateers.
If someone isn’t working for a Great Power, they’re probably working for a Merchant Guild, or for themselves. There’s money to be made, and people are cutting each other throats, and sometimes their own, to make it. Minerals from asteroids, narcotics and spices from Venus, ancient Martian artifacts and colonists from Earth, can be turned into cash, when they meet the right people.
But to do any of this, you need a ship. A ship with a good EmP Drive, to be precise, a cargo hold, some shields, a few blasters, and a good crew.
Everyone needs a good crew, which is why we’re hiring.
