The world is as it always was, but for a select few it is a different and dangerous place.
Myth and legend tells of a man with no name and no soul. A creature of chaos he wanders the earth, planting the seeds of humanity’s downfall. No ocean stops him, no mountain or wall slows him. Neither living nor dead, he exists as a phantom god of discord.
Those who claim to have seen him whisper of an endless stare, unseeing in hollow sockets atop hollow cheeks. As time moves so does he, his appearance ever-changing.
None speak of meeting his gaze - what few have exist as nothing but mindless, babbling shells.
It is from his seeds that blossomed the creatures of night, the ghosts and ghouls, the sandmen and shrieks, the banshees, witches, and skinwalkers. Or so the story goes.
Made in his image, they are a reflection of man and monster alike - stuck between worlds. With no name for their maker, the phantom man, they named him Shadow in homage to their place at the fringes of humanity.

This is a ‘serious’ story, and while humor is appreciated, characters are expected to be realistic in their behavior. They should have fears, weaknesses, dreams, likes, dislikes, & etc. Actions, knowledge, and comments that would not make sense in the real world is not welcome here.
Characters below the age of 16 will not be accepted, and any character below 18 must include an explanation in the description or narrator notes as to how the teenager has gotten by on their own. Parent/caregiver NPCs are not allowed as a justification, and the character must not have adult oversight to influence their actions unless it is another PC. In short, the character needs to be able to travel at will without calling home or asking permission.
Note: This doesn’t mean you have to kill off their parents. I just ask that characters have independence.

As narrator I will work as a guiding hand as needed, but this is still a collaborative story. Input and decisions by users will have an impact on how events play out, and players are encouraged to use NPCs, share characters, add details, and help develop the world.
This story takes place on earth during the late 20th century. Basic computers and word processors exist but are only beginning to become commonplace. Cellphones are the size of a brick and are owned by the very wealthy, leaving pagers as the primary means of sending a quick message. Much of human history is the same, and should be assumed so unless otherwise stated. The starting location of the party in the opening scene will be determined based on character backgrounds - the most likely locations are within greater Europe and North America (which includes Canada and Mexico).
