August 6th, 1945
America is still running high on Germany’s surrender. Tens of thousands of families are celebrating the return of their young men, even while others mourn their losses, and many still await the end of the conflict with Japan and the return of our men in the Pacific theater.
Many veterans are having trouble returning to their old lives, partly because of their traumatic experiences, and partly because the workforce has adapted in their absence. Few women are eager to give up the jobs they’ve earned just to become housewives again.
The report spreads from the radio and across the city that an atomic bomb has been dropped in Hiroshima. The impact of that has not yet made a dent in most people’s minds.
For a scientist at UCLA and her PI brother, nothing will ever be the same again.
