It is a world where magic and science coincide. Other races exist side by side with humanity, although their numbers pale in comparison to the dominant species on the planet. One can acquire a degree at MIMT - Massachusetts Institute of Magic and Technology. The ‘Net has become the dominant form of communication and entertainment in the world, and the technology controlling it has improved to the point where everyone is connected, wirelessly, constantly.
Everyone has a PAN - Personal Area Network - that a combination of wallet, smartphone, and laptop. Communication has never been easier, but it comes at the cost of constant monitoring through government agencies and corporations.
You are part of the seedier side of society. For reasons unique to each of you, you have removed yourself from the wageslave life and entered into a life of crime. For some it is the high price of living, for others it is the only way to reclaim a piece of identity from Big Brother.
