in the city of Beskyttelse bio-engineering is nearing a singularity. not only have scientists learned how to stop ageing, regrow limbs, and drastically modify human beings with little to no ill effects. but they are on the verge of designing wholly new creatures from scratch. no blueprints from other creatures or limits on what they can achieve other than those of the natural world. this advancement started 900 years ago when a genius named Arich Durren, finding himself in the midst of apocalyptic circumstances, engineered a genetically mutable organism that saved the civilization in which he lived. taking the form of a fleshy dome, the organism (later known as Arich’s cradle) spread and encased the continent. since then there has been general prosperity and beauty created under the peach colored sky inside the cradle. our story begins before a festival centered around one of the cradle’s last influences on the population of the sprawl city Beskyttelse. massive high frequency vibrations that run through it’s entirety, the denizens of the cradle are no longer disturbed by this as it has been a regular occurrence for centuries. every 2 years since the death of Arich Durren the exact date of which is still up for debate.
the shift to reliance on the cradle resulted in a period of several years in which all of humanity, aside from a small group dedicated to the cradle project, was thrown into a new dark age. when civilization returned it came quickly, due to Arich’s forethought. but it was only fully established after he was no longer available to help guide humanity. he is now heralded as humanity’s savior. patron saint of life in the new catholic church and similar things in most other religions. the festival we open on is a 7 day affair. a slow build of good will, sharing of life, and profit (for those less savory types still among humanity) all ending on the seventh day at noon. the event known as the quiver by most, the tremor Durren by the more traditionally minded, heaven shock, the purr of paradise, and so many other things through the years will once again occur.
