In these uncertain times, I am in need of your specific skills for an assignment of utmost importance. An ancient relic lost to the sands of time that needs to be recovered from its ancestral home. We will alter the course of history with this discovery! Do not worry about your past indiscretions, they are known to me and I am willing to overlook them in our quest - the pursuit of redemption should sharpen your senses and ensure that our endeavour is resolved amiably. Please note the transport to my chateaux has been pre-arranged - declining this opportunity is not an option. I look forward to meeting you in person.
The expensive paper felt thick to the touch and the eloquent writing showed deft penmanship and poise. The letter had arrived one day ago on 12 March 1938, the same day that Austria succumbed to Germany’s expansive gaze. Marquis Arceneaux, a well-respected landowner in the lower rungs of the French Upper class, knew the time was now to pursue something to change the tide of history. He had written to various well-known failures in the professions he required - he would use their failure to instil obedience to his cause - no matter the cost. Some in his circle mocked him, pursuing ancient relics in the hope of forgotten wisdom to overcome a looming, physical threat on the border, but the Marquis was unperturbed. He would invest time, money and his considerable political clout to get this expedition on the road - he knew that France needed some hope in these dark days. War approached with a ravenous desire to dispense misery and bloodshed and the Marquis mused that, perhaps, an antiquity from the past may just hold the key to salvation…
