All men among the Lebenelee are born as twins, each twin possessing half of a single soul. Did such men father children, the souls of the Lebenelee would dwindle to nothing; thus, in his twelfth year, each boy is brought with his brother to the pekebo opel, the wise mother of his village, who will discern which of the two is worthy to bear the whole of their soul, and which will become yfadkel, soulless.
In times past, the yfadkelee were warriors, and in the animal shapes granted to them by the enchanted skins called gebelbaiee, they took the field against the Big Lands both north and south. By valor or by cunning, they stole the souls of their enemies and returned home as whole men. But when peace was struck between the islands and the Big Land, the yfadkelee became outcasts, doomed to remain soulless and to wander far from their native lands.
Now, twenty years have passed since the yfadkel Raikek Catskin returned from the southlands on the trade ship Vixenfeather, opening the way for a tidal wave of commerce between the nations. The yfadkelee have begun to be accepted into Lebenel society, where their place is to enrich the houses of their twins’ wives by craftsmanship and trade. The houses blessed with many yfadkelee have grown in strength and wealth, standing as the linchpins of trade between the islands and the Big Land. Great ships after the northern style now shelter in Lebenee’s harbors, ferrying goods from the southern jungles to the northern grasslands and back again, leaving their tithe in Lebenee along the way.
No house has grown more swiftly than that of Sirilee, who welcomed Raikek home from his long wandering and, on the advice of the young new pekebo opel of her village, accepted his great wealth and cunningly managed trade empire as a sign that he had indeed bought himself a soul. Against all tradition, she took her husband’s twin as a husband in his own right. Since then, House g’Sirilee has grown in power and wealth so that it rivals even the great and ancient House g’Yrekee, whose ruling bloodline descends unbroken from Elhani Yrekobel, the great Foxwoman, unifier of the islands. This sudden shift in power has wrought a new enmity between the two houses, and whispers abound of plots, confrontations, and perhaps even war.
Such whispers have come even to the village of Nepekabo, a small settlement on a small island that until now has had little to do with the history of Lebenee. No blood of g’Yrekee or g’Sirilee inhabits these shores, and few ships rest even briefly in these harbors. But soon all of the islands may be called upon to take a stand, and even the smallest village will have a choice: to lend voice and strength to old traditions, to embrace the new prosperity that comes with change, or to carve out a camp of their own and stand in opposition to both g’Sirilee and g’Yrekee.
