London, 1905. King Edward is on the throne, and the British Empire is at the height of its power. The demons that crawled out of the ground fifty years ago have settled in splendidly and offer loans of life from their bank at really quite reasonable rates, if you’ll put up your soul as collateral. Britain’s magic is at an all-time low, but it doesn’t seem to be much of a problem, since foreign magic is no better off. All in all, things are going rather well.
Or they were until someone smashed up the British Museum’s Egypt room and started chopping off heads.
Earlier this morning, the police began a desperate search for the perpetrator, but have turned up nothing of use. Undoubtedly they will call in the great consulting detective, Berwick Strachan, to see what he has to say on the matter. Aside from these people and a few select others, the whole affair is still unknown - but soon enough it will leak, and by tonight London will be ablaze with rumour. Particularly if someone finds out that the demons, normally unconcerned about anything beyond the walls of their Bank, are putting together an investigation of their own.
That’s where you come in. Each of you lost your souls to the demons at some point - whether through a loan of life gone wrong, or in exchange for magic, or for some other reason. Perhaps you simply didn’t need it and sold it for cash. Whatever it was, the demons have contacted you now. You can all have your souls back, they say, and your debts cancelled - if you will find and destroy this strange enemy on their behalf.
None of you have much of an idea of what they’re up to, but everyone knows that demons never willingly part with a soul. Something terrible has begun - terrible enough to topple kings, fracture the Empire and threaten the power of Hell itself.
And they want you to stop it.
Your adversary is cunning and the path they have left is not exactly clear. Expect to have to do a fair bit of detective work here and there to pick up their trail properly.
When creating a character, please do come up with your own cards if you’d like, as long as you don’t give yourself any sort of advantage over the demons. Interestingly flawed characters are a particular weakness of mine! In addition to the usual backstory, I’d like to know how and why your character lost their soul to the Bank - did they default on a loan? Did they swap or sell it? Or were they tricked into giving it up? As well as that, the enemy you face is a potent one: do you have any idea how to defeat them, and why were you chosen to do so? I am not looking for five experienced warriors; the demons picked you out by examining your souls, without much regard for the bodies that house them. Your character may or may not be aware of what inner qualities the demons saw in them, but you ought to mention it in the biography.
I’m looking for around five varied players, with an option to extend the group if there’s a character concept I fall in love with that won’t otherwise fit.
