Icarus Blues is based on the New World Blue Gene - a hard-boiled crime drama and procedural.
Our backdrop is Blackfleet City (part of what was once known as London). It’s sixty years from now, and the crime that gets the biggest press is the illegal resequencing of your genetic structure.
The Blue, as they call it on the streets, is society’s most dangerous weapon and its worst drug. Forget explosives and armor-piercing rounds. Imagine what a human being can do if they’re literally bulletproof and can punch things with the force of a shotgun blast. Forget heroin or cocaine. Imagine how long a dealer can keep someone on the hook by making sure they no longer age.
But the Blue may also be humanity’s greatest boon. A certain remedy to some of our worst diseases and maladies. The end of congenital anomalies. The key to the most idealized human form possible, operating at the pinnacle of physical and mental faculties. Many people say that the Blue should be legal, that the benefits outweigh the costs, even as newsfeeds broadcast daily evidence of the horrors caused by its misuse, and the Church rails against the unnatural manipulation of DNA.
Which side of the debate - and the law - will you be on?
60 years in the future Blackfleet looks a bit shabby, what with the economy tanking in the 2020s after withdrawing from Europe; the city wasn’t nearly as appealing to foreign investment, and the money stopped flowing.
Things are just starting to look up, however, as British ingenuity is making headway in the burgeoning science of genetic manipulation. Whilst many of the best biotech brains headed over to the US years ago, a number of young biochemists and geneticists are setting up pop-up indie labs, that can whip up a batch of gene-altering Blue faster than you could whip up a batch of French Toast.
But where there’s fast profit to be made, there’s criminals looking to take a piece of the action. And where there’s Blue’d Up criminals, there’s the Metropolitan Police’s Blue Crimes Unit.
