Around two hundred years ago, half of the human race moved belowground. There were various reasons for doing this, the main one being that there were so many people on the Earth’s surface that there was no room for nature and the world was falling apart. In the beginning, the arrangement worked well. The Subterraneans provided natural resources for the Surfacers, and the Surfacers provided food for the Subterraneans. A few generations later, the Surfs were the dominant power in the world; they drove the Subs almost to extinction mining resources. Becoming a Sub became a punishment for crime. There were many riots and rebellions, and the power shifted between the two factions many times. All the mining threw nature into turmoil again, and a few generations later was the Great Cave-In.
Now there is only one Surf-Sub region left; it was too isolated to become involved in the wars and thus escaped the Cave-In. It’s in a basin surrounded by tall mountains. However, wanderers from the rest of the world are stumbling on this Haven with increasing frequency. Some are violent. All are pessimists. The seeds of mistrust have been planted and watered between the Surfs and the Subs of Haven.
