The madness of king Charles had caused troubles all over the country. Feeling slighted, the Burgundian nobles, under duke John the Fearless were now waging open war against the Orléans branch of royalty, led by the king’s nephew, Charles after the treacherous assassination of his father.
Paris was taken by the Burgundians a few years ago, when they defeated the dreaded écorcheurs (flayers) of the house of Armagnac, Orléans’s allies. Unable to hold the city, John had to abandon it, but he still has many partisans, particularly among the lower classes.
The city was now at peace, but tensions were high. The Armagnacs still had a fearsome reputation but their enemies were bent on revenge, biding their time. The English were plotting with Burgundy, waiting for a sign of weakness in the French camp to break the truce and strike. Charles d’Orléans was keen on making John pay for his father’s death, the mad king was having one of his crises and there were rumours of sorcery in his court.
It was in these difficult times that the inhabitants of Paris had to survive, defend their liberties and secure a future for themselves.
As discussed here, https://storium.com/forums#/category/lfp/thread/ggp1n0, the game is supposed to be centered on lowlives and ordinary people, rather than high politics and warfare. Straight historical, though the superstitious times leave a little leeway for very low fantasy.
The background might appear a bit complex, but that’s because the period is pretty rich in characters and plots. Don’t let that frighten you, no knowledge is required.
