After a series of natural disasters and pandemics, people came together to survive and formed Emden. Decades have passed since Emden rose up out of the ashes and although society was able to adjust itself fairly well, no one knows why only very few people are born with emotions.
To compensate for this, the government developed a donation system where the Emotional could donate their unwanted emotions to those who are born Empty. In this system, the donated emotions last until something might spark their original owner to feel them again. However, because most donated emotions tend to be negative, in the beginning, the Emotional became victims of various crimes committed by the Empty. As a response, the government separated and protected the Emotional and encouraged reproduction between them by prohibiting Emotional to reproduce with the Empty and requiring all Emotional females to get pregnant by the age of 17.
20 years after the donation system and reproduction laws were implemented, 3 Empty were donated positive emotions after living their whole life in sadness, fear, regret, and anger.
