When people started getting sick they might have thought it was just allergies, or a chest cold, or just a sinus infection. No one ever had the same symptoms but long before they even HAD symptoms they were already infecting almost everyone they came in contact with. Once you got one of many symptoms, you were killed by the illness in less than a week only to rise as a Zombie.
Texas, the Lone Star State, wasn’t immune to the zombie outbreak that had started nearly a year ago, but it was the most highly resistant. Between it’s lower population density per area and higher number of licensed firearms, hospitals, super-marts, and military than some states combined it held out a lot longer than many had expected. People started turning to Texas as if it were a haven from the Zombies.
Six months in, however, the world began to turn into a nightmare realm as the theory of evolution became proven. At first the Zombies seemed easy to kill. So people started to turn on one another. At a human level, only the strong survived. Strength to endure was still a strength but the Zombies also believed that only the strong survive.
Nine months into the Outbreak and Zombies that were once human had begun to mutate. Even animals, now infected and turning undead, were starting to evolve so rapidly they could only be mutations. Flying jungle cats and dogs that had more than one head were starting to become a common site.
By the time people had turned their attention back to the things that were eating them there was little left but the shadow of a world that was. Satellites still exist so communication is possible with the right skills and equipment… you just have to hope your group is either capable of those things or just strong enough to survive when raiders come by and decide to see how strong you really are.
At some point you may be encouraged to make a second character, because NO ONE is safe.
