The year is 3023. Nine hundred years ago, humanity made its final mistake. No one alive remembers what it was, and no one really cares. The air is still thick with ash and debris from the incident, and the organic life that remains would look alien to those who came before the Age of Digitization. Few humans survived; those who did all flocked to the Hub. The last sanctuary on Earth.
Doctor William H. White was the mastermind behind the Hub. For much of his life he had labored at making his dream a reality. A digital reality. The world was falling, and just as the final rock shifted and begun Earth’s rapid decay, the Hub was finally complete.
Consisting of several large buckyball buildings far out in the middle of the Pacific, the Hub was where tens of thousands of people could gather at once to partake in the newest fad: strapping yourself down in a Hub Inc. Virtual Intelligence Reconstruction and Life-support chair, or VIRAL seat for short. One had to simply lay back, get a little shot of some helpful nanobots, and settle down for a good, long romp in a digital world, where everyone you met could be anyone.
The Hub was the only thing to survive the disaster of 2123. The hundred thirty thousand survivors flocked there, and not everyone made it. The final census ever taken tallied the world’s population at fourty one thousand, seven hundred three. That number has never gone down since.
Doctor White quickly worked to develop a self replicating strain of the nanobot serum, and every one of the survivors were injected and laid out to live their lives anew, in a new world with endless possibilities. No one could wake back to their original bodies, but who would want to? The service bots of the Hub saw fit to their every need.
That number had stayed stable for nine hundred years. Until, suddenly, it began to drop. Slowly, surely, people were dying.
And you want to know why.
This will be my first time narrating a public story. I would prefer if you didn’t create your own nature cards, but weaknesses and strengths are okay as long as they fit in with the story. Not tagging as NSFW because I don’t want any sex scenes, but there will be swearing.
All levels of writers welcome, as long as you put effort into your moves!
