During the 1920s Whippoorwill Creek was a bustling coal mining town, at least that’s what it seemed to be. Then something began to happen, some blamed the mines and especially Barrow & Locke, some blamed the influx of foreigners from the West, some blamed the Clinchfield Railway, some blamed the whispers that whipped around in the night winds and day breezes and most all knew, although they never spoke, that the Inner Dark was somehow twisted up in things. But, in the end, Whippoorwill Creek stood empty and desolate. Some say the town was abandoned, all who had lived there fleeing, others said those that had been there were taken, and most accepted that those poor souls were dead and gone. The government came in and erected fences and warnings to keep out (or keep in) any unwanted person. So, Whippoorwill Creek sat in the little valley between the mountains, forgotten. Forgotten until the 1940s when the world was torn asunder and everyone was looking for a way to win. While the States focused on trifles such as the Manhattan Project, Philadelphia Experiment and Operation Fantasia, a very secret enterprise was commissioned. For reasons unknown, Whippoorwill Creek was chosen as the place to build a secret lab and support town. For two years Whippoorwill Creek was once again a thriving community. But then, in the fall of 1943, something began to happen, and once more the town was cleansed of life. This time the government built bigger fences and buried even deeper all traces of what had been. But nothing stays buried, not in Appalachia.
Jump to today - A government subcommittee found itself tasked with clearing a decommissioned government project base from the 1940s. Seems there are those who want to develop the area and have influence in all the right places. They just need a team to give the all-clear approval. So a team of specialists and representatives from government and a few private entities with their own interests is assembled. The task might seem straight-forward, but it seems most of the documents on Whippoorwill are either heavily redacted, missing, or otherwise unavailable. So, the team is going in somewhat blind, but it shouldn’t be too bad, right? Although, an advance 5 person team that was sent in seven days ago has not been heard from, missing all checkpoints. But it probably is nothing, right? Right? Right……….
