The hull begins creaking from the water pressure as you descend to the depths to evade the destroyers above. The whole crew can hear the sounds of the propellers passing over. The hydrophone operator whispers, “splashes”. The crew waits as beads of sweat form on their faces from the hot recirculated stale air. Explosions above. The boat shudders and shakes from the shock waves in the water. The captain commands “Deeper”.
It’s a claustrophobic existence in a cigar tube full of fifty other men. It’s the early part of WWII. The Germans are ramping up U-boat operations in the North Sea to cripple the English by depriving them of supplies and food. You are the captain of U-96 a Type VIIC class U-boat. You and your crew struggle to survive while trying to complete your mission of crippling the British cargo fleet.
