From it, the town of Devil’s Creek had emerged in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains. A pock-mark on Mother Nature’s pristine effort.
The tale of a god-like gold vein near Devil’s Creek perpetuated an influx of fortune seekers. Whether it existed or not was immaterial. It brought customers that were intent on exchanging their coin for food, lodging and goods.
The year before, three prospectors were found, murdered. Their bodies were discovered in a mine they had carved above the banks of the creek. The law was interested in the specifics and were offering a handsome reward for useful information. Even more should the case be solved.
Your reasons for being in Devil’s Creek were your own, although those reasons had not provided the wealth you had hoped for. A reward could be a welcome redemption.
