The year is 2167. The human race has recently discovered a method of manipulating wormholes, allowing near-instantaneous travel from place to place. Trekking to distant stars now takes decades, not millennia. Suddenly, the universe feels a little smaller.
Around the same time, SETI, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, locates distinct radio waves emanating from a distant planet of a distant star nestled inside a neighboring spiral arm of the Milky Way.
The year is 2169. A ship, the Bravery, is commissioned to traverse the great distance between Sol and star GNS-18655. It will take 42 years to reach its destination, and another 42 years to send a return signal - a single number. A one or a zero. Safe or not safe.
The year is 2253. No signal has been received. Humanity can only guess at the fate of the five crew members stranded hundreds of thousands of light years away. Suddenly, the universe feels a little colder.
The year is 2254. Advances in technology allows a new ship, the Carpathia, to reach the Bravery in only eight years. The Carpathia is geared and crewed immediately. You are aboard.
The year is 2262, and your arrival at GNS-18655 is rapidly approaching.
