You have just been assigned to your first duty in the Universal Union, the newly christened flagship, the Intrepid. Excited for your first assignment you are eager to make you mark on the stars and buck for promotion. You have waited for this your entire life, and you know that your chosen skill set will prove valuable to all.
This is to be a funny story of survival and death on the Starship Intrepid, bad sci-fi at it’s best. We will be telling the tales of all that have gone before the heroics of Andrew Dahl and his compatriots. There will not be a lot of choices from me regarding your Nature, Strength, Weakness and Subplot cards. One reason for this is I have created a few custom games and put much work into them to have them not take off. The second is that this particular story is truly about customization of characters since The Narrative can pretty much put you anywhere that fits for dramatic purposes. So I believe that coming up with your own cards will be infinitely more playable than stock ones I come up with.
There is one caveat with this game, I believe for The Narrative to truly work, there will be a fair amount of other players controlling your character. If you do not like this, please do not submit one for this story. My idea of implementation of The Narrative would be that the players and narrator lead other characters to do things they wouldn’t normally do. My initial thoughts would be that a player/narrator who makes a move would ‘call out’ a specific player by ending said move by putting words in another characters mouth, or placing them in a difficult situation.
An example of this would be a medically inclined character being ‘informed’ at the end of another player’s move that they have training regarding a specific Talarian predators anatomy and that they should be able to handle healing the Monarch’s prized pet’s sickness. This would ‘force’ the character into a Narrative driven situation, and would allow for sudden abilities/deaths that you would see in Star Trek, or in the book Redshirts.
Now, this is NOT hard and fast as to how The Narrative should work. We would discuss specifics before we actually started the game. I am very open to other ideas as to how it can work and welcome them. It would be a good idea to have read the book Redshirts by John Scalzi or at least perform some research on how The Narrative operates in the book. I view this story going the way of some of the old Paranoia games, with not all players working towards the same goal. Possibly even throwing each other ‘under the bus’ as it goes when it’s time for Away Teams. Thanks for considering the game, and I hope that we all have great fun on this little jaunt.
