It came out of nowhere. It changed the course of pop music. It was Muscles - the scrappily brilliant debut single by The Pynks.
The record label, July Records, had been worried.
Muscles was too raunchy,
too femenist,
too anarchic.
Each exec hated the abstract video. Radio Americana refused to play it. Supper Show DJ Ty Penn told the band to go back to the drawing board or to try out modeling.
But each woman knew better.
“It’s not negotiable as far as we’re concerned,” they insisted. “Muscles is our first single.”
“And if they decided they wanted to do something, then that’s what was going to happen,” Paradie’s co-writer Emmett “Em” Stanford told the live and at-home audiences at the Vtv Music Awards, a year after their 1990 debut, before introducing The Pynks as the recipients of the ‘Artists Of the Year Award‘.
“She said she wants a man
To always understand
But that’s alright for her
Still, it ain’t enough for me,” Giszelle Parks sparkled in a glimmering dress of pink and purples, “I want muscles!“
“I want muscles,” the other Pynks called back as they smiled and concealed how they felt about the announcement Parks and Jules Holloway, CEO of July Records, laid on them moments before the group strutted across the stage and entertained thousands of international fans who filled out the Toronto stadium, “All over his body! Make him strong enough from his head down to his toes.”
“Tonight’s special, extra special,” Giszelle made a show of going toward the edge of the stage, “We celebrate the 6th anniversary of Muscles, but also, my last night on stage as a Pynk!”
The crowd erupted in various reactions, as Giszelle motioned for you all to join her at the edge.
“I’ll always be a Pynk at heart!”
