This world is our own - or very much like it. In recent years it has become more and more apparent that mankind is in for a propitious future, determined in part by some individuals who have made exponential leaps in evolution and shown extraordinary powers.
These exhibited themselves as abilities once thought to be magical, now called “metahuman” by some and “abominations” by others. Regardless of what they were called or why some had powers and others didn’t, what they had was unknown and thus feared.
It wasn’t long before there were extremist factions, persecuting and hunting the gifted. There were also those who lobbied and pressed government to pass laws against them, tagging and imprisonment being the most benevolent end. On the other side, there were friends of the meta’s who helped them remain underground and find refuge.
There were rumors that asylum was being offered in Iceland to all those who could arrive at the shores of the island nation. What was known is that a ship, once at sea and beyond the twelve mile marker would be in international waters and outside of lawful intervention by the United States. On the other hand, they would be subject to U.N. and other international forces.
Meta-talents can be almost anything but would need to preclude time travel, flight or teleportation (or else why would an “evo” be counting on a slow boat to get anywhere). In short, no high level powers or god-like abilities.
