It’s the year 2068. Technological advances have rendered manual labour obsolete. Human beings have become commodities to be bought and sold by companies looking to build their client base any way possible. Implants have been drilled into the brains of a few prototype patients, into which information could be uploaded and downloaded at will, but those came with a kill switch quickly utilized. Drugs are available through intravenous drips, and reality has become something only the very poor, or very strong-willed must suffer through.
Then, Damian Augustus Rivers discovered an alternative. His virtual reality consoles began as a casual pass time and grew into a drug more powerful or addictive than any previously discovered. Very few people like themselves anymore, but luckily for them, they aren’t forced to live with themselves all that often. Thus, the Cell was created.
Plug in. Play. Become someone different, someone better. But it was never real, not until last night, when Kaylee Butler took a swan dive off of the roof of the forty-five story Hamlet Hotel in the Cell and stopped breathing in her 42nd street D-Block apartment in York all at the same time.
Now, system crashes, unrecognizable streams of numbers and symbols, and something people are calling “The Big V” are infecting the minds of the tens of millions of players. While Rivers struggles to reign in the monster he has created, Detective William Howl is charged with figuring out exactly what happened to Kaylee, and who it might happen to next.
