Alpine City, south side, patrol sector 8 … your own little slice of Hell, nestled in Neo-Corp paradise. You’ve been living here for a while … good times, and bad. Gang wars, Neo-Corp “Street Cleaning” operations, ACPD “Justice Sweeps”, designer disease plagues, serial killer sprees — you name it, you’ve survived it. That makes you part of an elite … the 1% of 1% that runs the ragged edge of legal and illegal, of deniable and disposable, of successful and body donor.
That 1% of 1% — your Set — are called Edgerunners. It takes all kinds to do what you do; good, bad, ugly, bold, beautiful, young, ruthless, crazy, cold blooded … it takes all kinds, and you meet all kinds out here on the Ragged Edge.
Last night, The City bit your ‘Hood … hard. Normally, in this city, an elderly couple running a street corner noodles & saki house getting gunned down and burned out wouldn’t even make the news. But this happened in your ‘Hood. This morning, your NetHook had a meeting invitation for the VIP room at your favourite watering hole. Dee Slam, Fixer and Thirdman of Sector 8 has got crypto-cash on the table and wants blood in the gutter about what went down at “Angulo Noodles kaj Alkoholo”. You ain’t gonna miss that meeting. This is your ‘Hood.
Setting: Fictional city nestled in the Canadian Rockies, “at least eight hours drive from anywhere you’d rather be”
Tone: Gritty, Ugly, Messy. Neo-Noir; Think Bladerunner (1982)
Number of players: 4 - 6
Player roles: Combat Cyborgs, Information Systems Hackers, Kit-bashing Techno-wizards, Urban Nomad Clan, Gang Members, Neo-Corporate Entrepreneurs, Rock/ Rap/ Spoken Word Bards, Independent Journalists
Power scale: Moderate. One or two pieces of “plot device” cybernetics at most. Non-military semi-automatic and automatic weapons; fists, swords, chains and nunchaku are more common in a fight.
First Scene will be: Someone has just pissed off one of the ‘Hood’s more senior “Fixers”. He’s hiring you — cash, in advance, generous — to suggest that the idiots in question stay outta his turf and your ‘Hood. You’ll be getting the details and the crypto-cred cards as soon as the game starts.
Character relationships: You all know each other, both by Street Reputation as well as a common watering hole. You may not be ‘padres, but you don’t have any reason to actively dislike each other, either.
Other Notes: Familiarity with either the “Cyberpunk 2013” RPG, “Cyberpunk 2020” RPG, “Shadowrun” RPG, the “Bladerunner” movie or the “Max Headroom” TV-series would be beneficial. Also, Walter Jon William’s novel “HardWired”.
ESRB: Expect “M” for “Mature” – Content is generally suitable for ages 17 and up. May contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and/or strong language. May contain use of Alcohol, Drugs, or Tobacco.
Rules Quirk: If you have 2 pieces of “plot device” cybernetics, then you must immediately re-write your Weakness “wild card” as Chrome Fever: You’ve gone beyond human normal … faster, smarter, stronger, with keener senses, deadlier skills and wilder limits. And your new normal means that sometimes your view of reality doesn’t fit so well with everyone else’s. And that can be … frustrating.
Every piece of “plot device” cybernetics after the second will cost you another “Chrome Fever” Weakness card.
