The steampunk themed adventure story of Aeronautica begins in an alternate version of London in the year 1895. Great Britain, The United States, and Germany, followed by a handful of other European nations, are the world’s leading superpowers because of their embrace of the benefits of steam-powered technology. In London the intricate clockwork mechanisms of the factories have increased production of all kinds a hundred fold and have stretched lofty towers of gleaming brass over the skyline to bellow their columns of steam into the sky. A network of pipes run up the sides of the brick buildings to send heat into homes while outside on the streets cabs are pulled by metal horses, and although passenger trains and the tugboats of the Thames still occasionally travel to and fro, the main form of transportation exists in the skies. Made up of a collection of hot air balloons, biplanes, and colossal airships, the London Airdocks is the largest port in the world, located above the ground and accessed on the roofs of the tallest buildings by wide catwalks. Men of business come here to trade and would-be adventures come here to seek their fortune in other ways. A small group of intelligent and courageous men and women have gathered here today, and while their personal reasons may differ, they are all set on sailing the clouds. Recently they’ve heard strange rumors about a floating archipelago; stone islands suspended in midair in the western skies with an allure of mystery, treasure, and renown. Their journey is sure to be fraught with danger, for much of the sky is untamed and filled with pirates and great wild birds of prey with wingspans of more than thirty meters, but that is a chance that the Aeronauts must be willing to take to achieve glory.
