A world of dew,
and in every dewdrop
a world of struggle.
It’s raining and the gutters overflow bearing the waste of humanity into Nagasaki Harbor. Mostly it’s just shit, but occasionally a discarded child’s toy, a broken geisha haircomb, and even sometimes a body end up in the harbor. Sometimes that body is a gaijin’s.
That’s right, the gaijin are here again, in force. It’s 1860 and Nagasaki is a free and open port. The Jesuits are back, but instead of their Portuguese brethren trading now it’s French, British, and Americans coming to buy and sell anything and everything. Many loyal to the Shogunate would call Nagasaki lawless and a disgrace to the serenity and order of Japan. An American gaijin would call it a Boom Town. Anything you want you can get here, legal or illegal.
The police try to keep order, but every day there are more people, and the magistrate’s budget never seems to have enough koku to hire more officers. Worse still, there are grumblings from the Satsuma to the South and the Choshu to the East that the Shogunate is corrupt (everyone knows that) and that the Emperor should be restored to power, which most consider a rather drastic step.
Nagasaki is a city of opportunity. New ships in port everyday, new buildings, and a Licensed Quarter overflowing its walls. You can make your future or lose your past, or both. Make money, become great, or die in the gutter trying. Welcome to a World of Dew.
