The world is black. Days have no sun and the nights have no moon. The buildings are like crude scrawlings of a child against the dark sky, like bone shards stacked haphazardly. Like at any moment they will fall over from the wind.
The wind consistently howls and moans in the distance. The people live in fear of the forest and the monsters and supernatural beings that thrive there. The monsters, they believe, will devour them alive. But are their garish looks misleading?
You are young, and brave, and decide that it is a good idea to take a walk in the woods today.
