In the beginning, there was One: one sea, one sun, and one being. With time, there came loneliness, and so One became Two. From the sea came the earth; from the sun, the moon; and from the being arose the First Familiar and the First Mage. Just as the sun gave shine to the moon, so too did the Familiar give raw power to the Mage. In turn, the Mage exercised the will of the Familiar, and from the hand of the Mage and the eye of the Familiar sprang all manner of wonders.
With Two, there was balance and companionship, but there was also strife. The Familiar grew enamored with her creations of fanciful design while the Mage was captivated by his creatures of enduring spirit. Though they shared the same origin, they were One no longer, and so there formed the Rift.
So it followed that the One world became Two, divided by the Rift, torn asunder by the power spilt between the Familiar and the Mage. The Familiar took refuge with her favored creations in Gaea, while the Mage settled with his in Terra.
And so time passed. Each world forgot its twin, and the heirs of the First Familiar and the First Mage dwindled, never knowing that they alone could cross the Rift.
This is where the story should have ended, but now Gaea is fading and nothing new can grow. As magic dies around them, a few desperate creatures of Gaea take up the forgotten mantle of Familiar. To revive Gaea, these new Familiars will brave the mythical world of Terra and seek out the lost Mages with which they can create new wonders– a difficult task when Familiars know nothing about Terra, and the Mages are citizens of the 21st century who don’t even believe in magic.
