“What?!“
You raise your head from the release forms having finished penning your signature. Donnie Wondrous, the host of ‘Last Chance for Romance’ stalks past you, his signature smile notably absent. You haven’t a moment to consider the significance. Two uniformed soldiers follow behind.
“Sir,” one calls after him.
“Mr. Wondrous, there’s no other choice.”
Donnie stops, pivots, and stomps back. “This show is my lifeblood! You can’t just show up and declare–”
“Sir, it’s a matter of national security,” insists a soldier.
“Forget the nation,” says the other. “The whole world is at stake. We don’t know what it is. We don’t know what it wants.”
“I thought you said it wanted to be a contestant,” quips Donnie sarcastically.
“Yes, sir,” reply both soldiers.
“So, what? I act like everything’s normal? I force the other contestants to go along with this farce as if everything’s a-okay?” Donnie gestures broadly in your direction. Your co-contestants and you exchange glances. “Look at those people. They didn’t sign up for this.”
“They will be doing a great service to their country,” says a soldier.
“Then what?” snaps Donnie. “What happens after it makes a choice?”
“We’ll go from there,” says the second soldier.
“This is unbelievable.” Donnie pinches the brow of his nose. “And don’t you dare try to argue it’ll help ratings!”
