Once Upon A Time
Who knows how you learned the truth. But your life, after that moment, was no longer your own. You have existed since then on owed favours, cheated games, and pretty lies.
Maybe you were born different, or perhaps something different happened to you. Something snapped and the normally invisible became visible, and you weren’t quite human anymore. Bess found you and quietly talked you into getting into her beat up old Honda and then quietly drove you back to the town houses where you officially became a Clerk: A guardian of Maya and defender of the balance here in the Grey.
With little guidance and no explanation, you were given a handbook and handed off to a motley group of strangers who were some of the most bizarre, interesting, and outlandish people you had ever met. It wasn’t until you saw your first demon, talked to your first fae, or answered your first life or death riddle that you understood just how much hung in the balance, and how much your previous life was over.
What’s this mean?
Clerks are either creepy humans or lousy Otherkin. No one’s really said either way. But they have the ability to walk in both worlds. Maya has employed them, given them purpose. Their job is simple in concept: to protect both worlds from invasion or interference from the other. They’re job is to keep the magic in the Deliria (fae realm) and the mundane in the Grey (human realm) and to protect the boundary between the two (Maya).
A Clerk’s Tale is the story of under payed, never thanked, high turn over, often fatalist people stuck in a job they can’t escape, don’t want, but must do to keep the world safe. It is a modern faerie tale adventure set in today’s Toronto. This particular campaign is inspired by: NightWatch/DayWatch, Dead Like Me, Neverwhere, and Fables, along with a myriad of books containing folklore, fairy tales, and demons.
Characters should be normal people who found themselves in extraordinary circumstances and are now slightly more than human as a result. There should be a defining moment in their history when they became other and when they were found and became a clerk.
Examples are the veterinarian who was bit by a puppy and is now a werewolf. The man whose brother wanted to be him and now he has a doppleganger who stole his life. The internet celebrity who was chased by a real troll and now can turn into any vermin to escape. The unicorn who made himself human because of love and is stuck here alone. The girl who seems new and can’t remember what happened a week ago. The drug addict whose body snapped after a ghoul attack and now she can throw a bus at you. The bard whose music speaks to you.
