The inland is severely impoverished, people struggle to survive. Their shelters are made of scrap tins, torn clothes, etc. There is not enough food for the population.
Everyone living on the Inland has a chance to go through The Process to live a better life on the Offshore. But only 3% make it through. The Process is a rigorous and painstaking system that weeds out the insignificant. Only the smartest, most unique people with skills to offer are selected.
Once a person turns 20 years old, individuals have ONE single opportunity to complete “The Process” and advance to the affluence of the distant “Offshore” society. While most of the unsuccessful candidates are simply eliminated, some fail to survive.
