24, Primrose Lane had seen better days, of course. It had been the much beloved home of the Bancroft family, which had, initially, basically owned the town of Greenville. However, by and by the Bancrofts had become scarce, as they unfortunately didn’t provide many descendants to tend to the manor. Finally, it was left to decay in front of the very eyes of the ever more modern Greenville society who only failed to change in one aspect: They never tired of mentioning what a pity it was about the Bancroft house.
When rumours started about a stranger named Aidan Prick having inherited the Bancroft house, this was perceived as good news. Surely he would transform the mansion back to its former glory. Greenvillans were excited when they saw light in the upstairs window for the first time.
However, all that changed for a little while was that more unfamiliar black cars with tinted windows seemed to populate the streets of Greenville and park in front of the manor. Then, a sign appeared on the fence: Appartments for rent. Then a note at the nearby train station as well as on the greengrocer’s noticeboard, with the bottom half cut in little stripes for any interested potential new tenants to take. The description itself promised a charming living space for almost ridiculous prices.
So maybe the building had not been renovated. Maybe the goings-on were secretive and potentially dubious. This was still good news, right? At least to the desperate who, at those prices, immediately considered moving in.
