Project W was only ever supposed to be a hypothetical, a ‘what if’ operation if worst came to worst, and unfortunately, it had.
Spirit animals have been around since humans can remember. Some people say that they originated from the souls of animals so touched by humans that they vowed to help them, even beyond the graves. Though where they came from is still unclear, one thing is known: humans who can connect with them are very powerful indeed.
There are three types of people who can contact spirit animals: Seers, who can see animals, but not understand the words they speak; Speakers, who while able to communicate with spirit animals, ultimately lack the ability to bind to one; then, the Users, the most rare of all, who can bind to a spirit animal and unlock their guidance and power.
Users have been seen as dangerous for a long time, and as a result, governments always sought to control them, even put in place measures and solutions if the possibility of them using their abilities to harm ever arose. Of course, those solutions and projects never really needed to be used, as most Users fell in line, but then, came the appearance of…
“The Pantheon. That is who we are dealing with. Intel says they are a group of spirit animal Users who have begun attacking cities across the world,” said the woman with disdain in her eyes and emptiness in her tone.
“Reports indicate their main objectives seem to be hunting down and either killing or abducting other Users, which obviously, is not a big issue for us, except the fact that they don’t seem to care how many casualties they create.”
She turned to the big screen on one of the walls of the meetingbroom, and begun to scroll through news reports.
“2000 dead in Barcelona, 500 in Fiji, over 600 still missing in Osaka… no one can handle this any longer.”
The soft sound of typing was the only thing left in the silence after she finished.
What's more, they also appear to have powers completely outside what is normal for their animal, if what the Verified Seers say is to be believed.
A cool, text to speech voice emanating from the laptop of the only other woman in the room.
“Ahem, thank you, Miss Hong. So what do you want us to do about it, Captain Walker?”grunted an old man, his white mustache twitching as he spoke, “we’ve tried military intervention, but it hasn’t worked. Whatever is the case, its no use.”
“I suggest,” the first woman said, still stating at the screen, tallying reports and deaths, “we begin Project Wild.”
“What? That’s nonsense, you’re just asking for death!” the man shouted, looking ready to pop a vein.
“Captain Walker hates Users more than anyone here!” A much younger man immediately jumped to Walker’s defence, “if she’s saying it, you geezers should listen!”
“Using Users to fight Users is never going to work. They’re much more likely to defect, and then we’re going to have a problem ten times worse. Project Wild should only ever be used as a last resort.”
Then, an alert flashed on the screen, drenching the entire meeting room in red light.
“From General Slate… hm.” Walker mused as she continued reading. “An Iranian village, reduced to a crater…”
“That’s probably our cue, don’t you think?”
