It was another Friday evening at the University. While most were at parties or on dates, you chose a different path. You grab your notebooks, your dice and your rulebooks and head to Kensington Hall, one of the oldest buildings on the University. Once there, you head to the bowels of the building, a dimly lit, deserted area to engage in these acts of imagination, simulated horror and the struggle to survive. You are in a Role Playing group….
Professor Ethan Sinclair is the teacher advisor of the Wayfinder Society, but in reality it’s his hobby. He is the Gamemaster of this world, he has created, Palinar. He’s a friendly enough sort, tough but fair and his games are considered a bit more ‘old school’ than the newer ‘story over rules’ crowd usually goes for. That said, it’s a world he weaves so well, that you find yourself wanting to dive back in.
As you enter the room this time, the professor has a more serious look on his face. “Tonight we see if the last two semesters has been about lessons learned or lessons failed….”
This game is an homage to (well, straight rip off if I’m being honest) the Guardians of the Flame book by Joel Rosenberg. I did not call it that because I haven’t read all of the series but I will elaborate below for those that do not know.
Your characters will become their Palinar characters very shortly into the game. So, much like some of the ‘trapped in the video game’ stories, except you are trapped in your Fantasy characters. Those characters will have the abilities of their fantasy characters; weapon master, dark vision, mage of the circle, etc.
I expect this to be a sort of fish out of water, Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s court story, but with the added horror that if something bad happens here, what does that mean for you back home?
