S&M: Into the Woods

Smoke & Mirrors meets Death & Company

You are a team of supernatural social workers, investigators who uncover the dirty little secrets of the magical community - the Speculum Mundi: West coast half-breed paranormals recruited for the Smoke & Mirrors syndicate by a Chinese Wu in San Francisco, and East coast halfies recruited for the Death & Company guild by an Italian Strega in Brooklyn.

While you have wildly differing backgrounds and paths that have led you to this place, you all share a few things in common: You’re mixed race, your communities hate your kind…and you’re still the only thing standing between the people who hate or fear you, and the end of the world.

You’d think there’d be a limit on how often the world needs saving, but it turns out… no, actually. The world is dragged towards destruction with every breath by the actions of the ignorant, the fools, the power-hungry, the mad - creatures with power, ambition and no gods-damned sense whatsoever.

Of course, the offenders rarely understand or realize that they are dragging the world a step closer to annihilation…though there was that one necromancer…but that’s another story, from another time.

This is one of those cases, you suspect: ignorant fools taking foolish actions to feed their lust for power…with no sense of the potential consequences.

Or it could be nothing at all, really. Just another unfortunate case of a large, frightening inter-dimensional beast devouring the souls of innocent young paranormals.

That’s what you’re here to find out.

“Here” is the “Two-Spirit Wellness Camp,” a touchy-feely retreat for adults that promises to equip attendants “with certain tools that will allow them to effectively engage the natural challenges associated with life.” Through connections with nature, daily challenges, coaching and meditation in a relaxing, nurturing environment, the camp offers an escape for adults struggling with mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression, as well as helping down-and-out individuals life skills, such as improved focus, renewed spirit and motivation.

That’s all well and good, but people have been going missing. The camp claims they’ve finished treatment, reintegrated into society, and they’ve had no further contact or responsibility for the individuals. Some of said individuals have, in fact, resurfaced, claiming that they simply needed “time away,” and refusing to answer any other questions.

So far, there’s not been enough evidence that anything genuinely wrong has been going on…only some people have begun to notice a disturbing pattern: the people who are disappearing are halfies
