Not a whole lot of excitement happens in the lovely middle American town of Peniston (pronounced penn-iss-ton, you weirdo) and most of the 4,000 or so residents of the town like it that way just fine.

For many years, the town was dutifully served by Mayor Edwin McDonald, an affable, grandfatherly old man who won every election handily– if he was even opposed, which he usually wasn’t. However, all good things must come to an end, and Edwin McDonald has passed away.

The town needs a new mayor. And this is where things get interesting.

Things here are pretty laid-back, so nobody ever really bothered to write down any strict requirements for running for mayor. They just weren’t ever needed, especially since Edwin McDonald had been the mayor longer than a lot of the younger people had even been alive. What that really means, though, is by the letter of the city’s laws, pretty much anybody can run for mayor. You don’t have to meet any particular qualifications. You don’t have to be a resident of the town, or even the United States. You certainly don’t have to bother filing any complicated paperwork.

This ease of getting on the ballot, combined with a convergence of other factors, means that the mayoral race in Peniston is about to get more exciting than it has been in ages…
