“You’ve no doubt heard the rumours by now. The whispers alleging revolution, change, a return to the before… You can feel the shift in the wind, sense the relationships that barely keep this land in peace pulling taught…
“They say it will be the dawn of a new age. That this world we’ve built for ourselves will finally come crumbling down… I called you here to tell you that all these rumours are true…
“But that they won’t be for much longer.”
The matriarch keeps her gaze focused on you, the weight of her unwavering attention almost suffocating. She’s never called you to her throne room alone. Not like this, at least. You know what she wants, what she’ll ask for, but you’re not sure if you’d really believe it… if you’d want to.
“The High Priest of the fourth dynasty has indeed returned just as suddenly as they disappeared. They may likely be nothing but a charlatan, manipulating those fools in Anthis, but that is not a gamble I am willing to take.
“I am sure you know by now what I expect of you, that you know the importance of this task. Learn, assess and if needed, if possible… terminate.
“Be discreet, be quick… and be aware, for I am all but certain you won’t be the only assassin on this mission.”
Your footsteps echo throughout the large hall as you are dismissed. When they are sure you are gone, one of the matriarch’s most trusted speaks up, breaking the unrest…
“Why send her? You have much better assassins to choose from! I would go in her place if you would so permit.”
The matriarch’s glare is answer enough. Do not question me… it seems to say, silencing the murmurs of the others present.
But she goes on. “I fear that a new age might come to pass no matter what we do. War is on the horizon… and I am not willing to risk one of my best when it has all but begun.”
It is remarkable her lieutenant is still capable of speaking. “You mean to say―”
“I meant what I said. Now, we shall not speak of this again. There are more pressing matters at hand.”
