A full moon hangs above castle Ravenloft, shining a fading light on the dead castle atop mount Bartok. Within it lives the reclusive ruler of Barovia, Count Strahd von Zarovich, yet he concerns himself little with the affairs or needs of his subjects.
Around the food of the mountain, small villages and wandering camps and caravans struggle against the unending darkness, and the everlasting mists that cling to the dense forests. Even during the day, a heavy blanket of clouds cover the sky, letting but the faintest glimmer of a cold sun shine through.
Some pray to the Morninglord during all hours of the night, huddled in small chapels, hoping to keep the darkness away from their insignificant lives just one more night. Others follow the call of Mother Night, embracing the darkness to find purpose and greatness in these trying times. Yet some stand against the dark, protecting those in need, bringing the fight the monsters.
And yes, here monsters stalk about, and dead gods writhe in their tombs.
The lands are filled with evil, drenched in the blood of a hundred generations. No soul is saved, no prayer will be heard, and not even the dead find rest.
